The InovFarmer.MED project aims to develop new business models to enhance the resilience and competitiveness of small-scale fig producers in the portuguese market.
Within this sector, a viable model has been identified, focused on producing a high-quality Portuguese dried fig using an innovative drying process.
During the meeting with GOFigo producers, the project team presented this proposal, which seeks to add value to overripe figs — typically discarded from the fresh market — by transforming them into dried figs.
The featured technology is a hybrid solar drying chamber, which combines solar energy and electricity to power a forced-air circulation system. This method extends shelf life, reduces post-harvest losses, ensures greater product uniformity, and strictly complies with food safety standards, resulting in a safer and more standardized dried fig.
The dissemination of this innovative solution aims to support production sustainability and create new value-added opportunities for small producers.
